Caffeine from matcha clears like caffeine from any drink: about half is gone every ~5 hours. L-theanine does not speed that up, so an afternoon cutoff still matters.

Is matcha OK to drink before bed?

Matcha is often marketed as a gentler caffeine source, but it still contains real caffeine: about 19 to 44 mg per gram of powder in published lab analyses. A 3 g matcha latte at 4 pm, estimated here at about 105 mg, still leaves around 43 mg in your body at 10:30 pm. That is roughly what you would get from half a cup of brewed coffee right before bed.

The calculator uses caffeine's average half-life of about five hours, from the Institute of Medicine's review, which notes a wide individual range of about 1.5 to 9.5 hours.

Why "calm caffeine" can still disrupt sleep

Matcha contains L-theanine, which may take the edge off caffeine's jittery feel. That can make an evening matcha feel harmless. But theanine does not remove caffeine or make it clear faster, so the caffeine can still affect how deeply you sleep even if you don't feel wired. Per-serving ranges are in how much caffeine is in matcha.

Choose a smaller evening serving

If you want matcha later in the day, the serving size is the easiest lever:
  • Koicha, 4 g: about 140 mg, the worst choice for late in the day
  • Latte, 3 g: about 90–105 mg
  • Usucha, 2 g: about 70 mg
  • Light usucha, 1 to 1.5 g: about 35–50 mg
Lower-grade matcha also tends to contain less caffeine than ceremonial, according to a 2025 comparison of grades, though it is also more bitter.

Finding your personal cutoff

Try entering your usual drink and bedtime, then move the intake time earlier until the bedtime number drops below about 25 mg. For most people with an 11 pm bedtime, that means finishing a 2 g bowl by early afternoon and a 3 g latte by around lunchtime.

Factors that make it worse

Clearance is slower during pregnancy and for many people taking oral contraceptives; liver conditions and some medications slow it too. If you notice that late matcha affects you more than the calculator suggests, increase the half-life setting to 6 to 8 hours.

Caffeine-free evening alternatives

If you want the ritual without the caffeine, consider a caffeine-free herbal infusion in the evening and save matcha for the morning. Any tea made from the tea plant, including hojicha, still contains some caffeine.

Frequently asked questions

Will matcha keep me up at night?

It can. A 3 g matcha latte at 4 pm still leaves roughly 40 mg of caffeine in your system by 10:30 pm at a five-hour half-life.

Is matcha better than coffee before bed?

A typical 2 g serving has less caffeine than an 8 oz coffee, but it is not caffeine-free. Serving size and timing matter more than the source.

What time should I stop drinking matcha?

Aim for 8 to 10 hours before bed for a standard serving. Use the calculator to find when your bedtime level drops below about 25 mg.
